When you look at Facebook individuals or Facebook businesses the first thing that you go to is their profile or fan page, you want to see what they look like, what they are interested in, their status and religious/ political views etc. All of this information adds to the perception that they have in regards to your personality or identity. Have you thought much about how your business profile (fan page/) is contributing to your identity on Facebook?
Facebook asks for some personal information when setting out your personal profile. You must hav a personal profile to set up your Facebook businesses profile. Just remember that you don't have to fill out every section. Many "businesses" who operate under their own personal name (eg therapists, coaches, chefs, musicians) cross their "personal" profile with their "business" presence a grey area! In this case you should perhaps leave out some information from the personal profile unless it is critical to your business image - eg avoid stating your religious and political views as this could conflict with or offend the views of some of your audience members.
You want to keep your Facebook businesses profile (fan page) just that business in every way. Stick to business related topics and your audience will remain focused on the important facts. ` This is why Facebook insists that "personal" is "personal" (profiles) and has given Facebook business profiles the "fan page" tool under which to operate. The fan page (business profile) keeps your business completely separate from your personal life.
You can also add other websites in your Facebook businesses profile but try to limit these to one or two. Research has proven that when faced with too many options, people are less likely to take action. So be sure of what you are offering and provide them with fewer options to get more action. If you have more than one distinct business entity you might perhaps whish to setup two fan pages for your business (Facebook allows you an unlimited number of fan pages business profiles keep each one targeted!).
In your contact information, make sure that you put your email address, website and phone number. You can also gather images, press releases and testimonials from past or current clients, make these into an image and upload them or use the notes application. This increases the validity of your Facebook businesses profile and shows that you have integrity in your business operations.
Remember, there are over 400 million people on Facebook, so make the most of your professionalism and set up a decent profile to attract the people you want to grow your business like other Facebook businesses.
If you choose to mix business with pleasure be careful Facebook closes down profiles deemed to have been created for "business" purposes. Your "business profile" is known as a fan page create a fan page and relax!
