Facebook is very rigid. It does not allow for much customization however the advantage of the facebook fan page is that it can be customized using an application called Static FBML. This application will allow you to input code into your page and display your own pictures and content. Unlike applications, the static FBML can be used within Facebook. You've probably seen it in action already on many other pages advertising their service or saying a big hello when you arrive.

This will show you how to install and setup the FBML application and give you a basic custom fanpage using an image. You can use any image for this for practice, but for the best look it should be 520px wide and any length. Design it in your program of choice and save it for the web as a jpeg and upload to your webspace or a free image hosting site like imageshack. Take note of its location. Alternatively you can use any image on the web for practice. Just find the image, right-click & copy image address - if you have done this right you should be able to paste this address in a browser like Explorer and view the image.

Go to Facebook and search for Static FBML

You'll find the app page. Look at the upper left corner, just below the logo and click on 'add to my page'. If you've more than one page pick the correct one! That's the app installed.

Now return to your fanpage, click on 'Edit Page' below your photo and find the Static FBML app. Click 'edit'. Name the tab - a short one is best and paste this in the box
<http://www.domain.com/yourimage.jpg>
. You will need to to replace the above address with the address of your image then click on 'save'. Return to the 'edit' page section where you can see the list of apps and click on 'application settings' under the Static FBML app. Your app should be on a Tab.

Finally return to your fanpage and make the tab visible by clicking on the + 'Add a New Tab' link at the top of the page by all the other apps like as photos and videos. Once you have added the tab you want to make it the default tab. Click on 'settings' at the top of your wall and set it to be the default landing tab for everyone else. Now new visitors will see your image.

That was a very simple guide for inserting an image as your custom fan page. There is a lot more you can do if you have the proper coding skills or you can find someone to do it for you. Much HTML code will work, some will not. Same with css, but hopefully this tutorial will have given you an insight as to what can be done with Static FBML
